1. Cultural Transformation: Setting the stage for successful performance-based business management; identifying how the organization needs to change from monitoring compliance to managing for results.

2. Strategic Linkage: Providing a consistent vision throughout the organization, making sure the results achieved reflect organizational strategic goals as well as program objectives.

3. Governance: Establishing roles, responsibilities, and thresholds for project implementation and issue resolution.

4. Communication: Identifying the content, medium, and frequency of information flow, as well as the organizational element the information is intended to support.

5. Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, monitoring, and managing risks.

6. Performance Monitoring: Analyzing and reporting status on a regularly scheduled basis during project execution so that course corrections can be made to achieve the desired results.

When applied throughout the acquisition cycle and combined with other tools, such as Earned Value Management, the Six Disciplines increase leverage to identify opportunities for improvement and implement course corrections to keep the program aligned to deliver results.
